Sunday's Concert

This Sunday I performed with a lovely cast and crew in the opera "Paix a Peyresq" at the Lighthouse in Poole. It was a fantastic experience. I met so many lovely singers, and the evening's program was headed by Dame Felicity Lott, who presented a recital before our show. The photo above, left to right, features: Aurore Lacobe, Dame Felicity Lott, and myself.
Thanks to Graham Stansfield and David Owen Norris for involving me in this lovely production. It was a great pleasure.

"Warning Signs"

I am walking on air after a really fun shoot yesterday with Kris Searle and Darnell Swallow. The track, "Warning Signs," is soooo good. You will love it. We had a great cast of dancers, who portrayed my conscience or alter ego, with choreography by the lovely Paul Tracy. Makeup by Katie Searle, incredible energy from the director, Rik Argent, and a gorgeous up and coming model who blew everyone away with his natural charisma and talent, Gregory Gaige.

It was a privilege yesterday to shoot with Kris and his team. I can't wait to share the final result with you!

I participated in an excellent workshop yesterday hosted by Co Opera Co in London. I had the opportunity to work with Edward Dick and Martin Lloyd. I was able to meet several fantastic singers who are invested in developing the acting side of their work; a subject which is dear to my heart!

Fiat Commercial

Yesterday I lent my talents to a Fiat commercial featuring Goldie, the UK based musician and actor. I got to sing opera over drum and bass tracks and I'm looking forward to seeing how it turned out! It was a fabulous shoot. I met so many cool London based musicians, and enjoyed the experience immensely. Love my job!

Robert Altman

My favorite Christmas present was Robert Altman, the Oral Biography, by Mitchell Zuckoff (Knopf.)

Altman was the Hemingway of American cinema. He was an extraordinary man, a visionary talent, and I am very fortunate to have had the chance to work with him late in his career.

I was cast in his production of "A Wedding" at Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2004. In September we began rehearsals; it was heaven to me. Six days a week we rehearsed: a cast of America's top singing actors, and nine actors, including me.

Opening night, the house was full, with about 30 members of the international press in attendance. The opening night party was a blast. I went up to Bob, who was holding court regally with his beloved Katherine, and I just leaned over and told him, "Thank you so much for everything. I'm having the time of my life." I really was: the friends I'd made, the experience I was having, the privilege of working on that stage with those artists. I think he knew what I meant, because Altman lived for his work.

At 81, which was his age at the time of our production, he was extremely alert. Most of all, you could tell he loved what he did. I would have liked to have known him in his younger days, but the legend lives on, and so do his films. At 81, his sense of humor, his dedication to his craft, and his tireless passion for the work was not diminished in any way. Bob showed up to every single performance during the run. This is not usual. He lived for the work, and you can see that in his films. It's about the circus, the people, the life of it all. He never wanted to miss a moment of it. I love him for that.

His appreciation of actors was a gift. Never before or since have I come across a director who loves watching actors work as much as Bob did. As a result, actors give their best performances. You feel like the sun is shining on you when Bob notices your work, laughs at something you deliver, and best of all: when he gives you more bits.

At the time I was working with him, I was studying Meisner Technique (based on Stanford Meisner's acting technique) in Chicago. The work I was doing there gelled with the way Altman works, partly because it's improvisatory. I think he appreciated my enthusiasm, and I lucky to have him hand me a few more comedic bits to expand my part in the final production. He even said something to me at the cast party about how all the singers "just didn't get it." I think he was just doing what he did: appreciating who he was with, and knowing how to speak with them. He had that gift, too. I say this because we had some phenomenal talents in our cast: Lauren Flanigan, for one, blew me away with her acting technique. However, I'll treasure that compliment because he was acknowledging that I loved the craft.

At the cast party, he approached me, and told me we were taking the show to Los Angeles (where he knew I was moving next), and that I was perfect for the part and he wanted to make sure I played it there.

Sadly, the funding never came through, singers had other committments, and the show never went on to LA.

Still, I will never forget that production, and most of all I'll never forget Bob. He lived up to his legend, and then some.

I'm in Chicago enjoying the holidays with friends and family. I'll be back on this blog in January. My goal is to do one photoshoot a week for at least the first half of 2010. I'll also be presenting a classical voice recital featuring music by Mozart, Donizetti, Rossini, and more on February 1st. Soon after that I will be recording a demo. I will post my work here as it is available.

Last week, I completed a photoshoot with Ksenia Belash, in London. She's a talented up-and-coming photographer. It was a pleasure to work with her, as we share many of the same artistic influences. (We both admire French New Wave cinema, Ellen von Unwerth, and more.)

Mac Phail Opera Workshop Final Performance

The final performance of Audrey Stottler's opera workshop was held on July 30th at Antonello Hall, Mac Phail Center for Music in Minneapolis, MN. It was a successful showcase of intermediate to advanced opera students. Highlights of the evening included Kaori Williams' performance of "Un bel di" from "Madama Butterfly" by Puccini, "Celeste Aida" from Aida sung by Kenneth Noble, and much more! I personally performed "Voi che sapete" from "Le Nozze di Figaro" by Mozart, and a duet from Hansel and Gretel, playing Gretel with mezzo Sidney Walker as Hansel.

I recently stood in for Christina Aguilera for her commercial "Screen" for her new perfume. I am about the same size as the petite singer. On the shoot, I worked with super cool photographer Ellen von Unwerth from Germany. She made a great impression on me. She's a beautiful woman with great talent, and is strikingly fun and easy to work with. If I'm lucky, someday she'll be shooting my ad campaign, right?! The ads should be really classic Hollywood and beautiful.

Antonello Hall, Mc Phail Music Center, July 30th

On July 30th I will be performing at Antonello Hall, located in Mc Phail Music Center, downtown Minneapolis from 6 - 9 pm. I am participating in an opera workshop led by Audrey Stottler, my voice teacher. Audrey is a singer of international acclaim. She debuted as Turandot at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. She appeared in the film "Turandot Project" which was filmed in China with Placido Domingo. She has sung in the finest opera houses worldwide, including La Scala in Milan, the Met in NYC, Vienna, Buenos Aires, and Rome.

Her students (including me) will be presenting an evening of arias, duets, and ensemble pieces. I will be performing "Stridono Lassu" from i Pagliacci, "Voi che sapete" from le Nozze di Figaro, and a duet from Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel."
